Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, South- South zone, and Presiding Archbishop of Christ Missionaries Crusaders Church International Inc Worldwide, Archbishop God-Dowell Oyibo Avwomakpa, has said a listening government like President Muhammadu Buhari’s government should not be made to do things that will work against the peace and protection of lives and property in Nigeria.
He said the order of the Inspector-General of Police that all persons bearing arms across the country should submit them amounts to leaving Nigerians, who have been given license to own arms, at the mercy of people who go about attacking innocent persons with reckless abandon.
He noted that in many rural communities, wild animals attack people and the people depend on their guns to protect the communities.
Avwomakpa in a statement by Mr Ovie Edomi, Special Adviser on Media, noted that the United Nations prescribed “one policeman to 500 persons as the international standard but in Nigeria, it is one policeman to one million persons.”
He questioned the rationale behind the order for the withdrawal of arms from persons who ordinarily have government approval for them to acquire such arms.
