- The group said it will be inappropriate to tell licensed gun owners to submit their weapons without disarming herdsmen first
- According to the group, its main concern is the restructuring of the country
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the inspector general of police to disarm armed herdsmen before ordering licensed gun owners to submit them to the police, adding that its main concern now is the restructuring of Nigeria.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, said without disarming herdsmen, it will be inappropriate to tell licensed gun owners to submit them in the face of terror and attacks on innocent citizens in all parts of the country especially middle belt and South.
The body in a statement signed on Thursday, March 8, by Chuks Ibegbu, the national deputy publicity secretary said: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo will consult widely before taking any decision on 2019” and that it will “not take any decision on 2019 without subjecting it to the opinion, views, inputs and contribution from a wide spectrum of Igbo society.

"Our main concern now is the Restructuring of Nigeria in sync with other progressive groups and individuals in Nigeria. Once Nigeria is Restructured , other things will fall in place. We want a level playing ground for all sections of Nigeria. We want justice, equity and fairplay. We want a Nigeria in which the bountiful talents of Ndigbo and other Nigerians will be fully realized.
"The nation as it presently constituted kills initiative. The president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Barr Nnia Nwodo assured Ndigbo that he and his EXCO are committed to protect the interest of Ndigbo at all times.
"Ohanaeze Ndigbo also called on the Inspector General of Police to disarm armed Fulani herdsmen before ordering licensed gun owners to submit them to the police.
"Without disarming the armed herdsmen , it will be inappropriate to tell licenced gun owners to submit them in the face of terror and attacks on innocent citizens in all parts of the country especially middle belt and South."
Two Igbo groups, Igbo Peoples Congress and Igbo Aborigines, condemned the police IG for his order to licenced gun owners to hand them over the the police within 21 days. The spokesmen of the groups, Okey Colbert and Chidi Obisike, claimed it was a grand design to expose innocent Nigerians from the middle belt and South to massacre by armed herdsmen who ought to be disarmed first before any such order is given.
The spokesmen also criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for the killings in various parts of the northeastern region.
"May be if his own children were butchered by hoodlums, he would know how other victims of the Fulani herdsmen terror feel too, the further noted," they said.
They asked Nigerians to vote out President Buhari in 2019 if he decides to recontest.

In a previous report by NAIJ.com , the Ohaneze Ndigbo rejected the planned establishment of cattle colonies as a way of finding peace and putting an end to constant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
Vanguard reports that the Enugu state chapter of the apex socio-cultural Igbo group in a statement on Wednesday, January 17, said the establishment of cattle colonies was against the laws of the bible.
