- President Buhari has appointed Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as substantive DG of the NIA

- According to Femi Adesina, the president’s aide, the appointment takes effect immediately
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as substantive Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Punch reports.
The president approved the appointment on Wednesday, January 10, and the development was made public by Femi Adesina, his special adviser on media and publicity.

NAIJ.com gathers that in a statement released on Wednesday, Adesina stated that the appointment takes effect immediately.
It read in part: “Abubakar had extensive experience working with the United Nations in peace support operations, mediation process, preventive diplomacy and good offices, as well as the promotion of good governance and respect for the rule of law and human rights.
“He also briefly served as Senior Adviser at the Multinational Joint Task Force with headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, before his appointment as SSAP.
“Abubakar holds a B.A degree in French Language and Literature, and an M.A degree in Francophone Maghrebian Literature, both from Bayero University, Kano. He is also fluent in English and Arabic.
“The appointment takes immediate effect.”
The former DG of the NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke, was sacked by the president in October 2017, after the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, for which NIA is laying claim.
A three-man committee led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had also been constituted to probe Oke.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that President Buhari finally received the report of the Investigation Committee
into the allegations against former SGF Babachir Lawal and ex-DG of the NIA Ayo Oke.
The report was submitted by Vice President Osinbajo.
